Word Count vs Character Count
Understand which measure matters for essays, forms and posts.
What each count measures
Word count estimates the number of word units in a draft. Character count measures individual characters, including punctuation; some systems include spaces, and some exclude them. A short word and a long word each add one to a word count but different amounts to a character count.
When to use each
Use word count for essays, articles and speaking drafts. Use character count for forms, metadata, SMS or social fields that set a character limit. If the requirement is ambiguous, verify it in the system where you will publish.
- A 500-word essay target is about content length.
- A 160-character field is about available space.
- Emoji and combined Unicode characters may be counted differently by different platforms.
Avoid last-minute surprises
Leave some room under a strict limit. Copy your finished text into the destination field and check its own counter before submitting. Our counters help with drafting, but the destination app applies the final rule.
