How to Count Words and Characters in Text

Start with the requirement

A word limit and a character limit measure different things. A form may count every space and punctuation mark, while a writing assignment may count only words. Check the rule before editing. If it says “characters without spaces,” do not use the total character count.

Count and revise

Paste your draft into the Word Counter. Read the word count and the character counts separately. If you need to cut text, remove repeated ideas before shortening individual words. This usually keeps the meaning clearer.

For a social post or a form field, use the Character Counter to see how spaces affect the total. For a document, check paragraph and sentence counts too; one long paragraph may be harder to read even when it fits the limit.

• Keep the exact final punctuation in the text you count.
• Check the destination app again before submitting; different apps may treat hyphens and emoji differently.
• Use reading time as an estimate, not a promise.

A quick example

“A clear plan saves time.” has five words. Spaces and the period still contribute to its total character count. If a platform says 25 characters maximum, the word count alone cannot tell you whether it fits.
