How to Extract Text from a PDF
Copy selectable text from a PDF without uploading the file.
Check whether the PDF contains text
Many PDFs contain selectable characters. Others are scans made of images. A text extractor can read the first type, but a scanned page needs optical character recognition (OCR) before it becomes editable text.
Extract locally
Choose a file in the PDF to Text Extractor. The browser reads each page and combines the selectable text into a plain-text result. Copy it or download a .txt file. The layout of complex multi-column pages may not survive extraction.
- Review headings, tables and page breaks after extraction.
- Check for missing symbols or unusual fonts.
- Do not assume a blank output means the PDF is empty; it may be scanned.
Use the result
Plain text is useful for notes, search and drafting, but it loses most formatting. If you need exact visual layout, keep the original PDF.
